Customs data, explained

What customs data is, what it contains, and how to access it programmatically.

Understanding customs data

Customs data is built from the import and export declarations that traders file with customs authorities. Each declaration typically records the HS code, declared value, quantity, country of origin and destination, and the parties involved.

Its strength is detail on what was traded and at what value. Combined with bill-of-lading shipment data — which describes the physical movement — it gives a complete picture of trade flows. Both are available through the Trade Data API.
